ECS Early Career Award

BayBatt member Prof. Dr. Matteo Bianchini (Chair of Inorganic Active Materials for Electrochemical Energy Storage) has received a major international recognition for battery research at the University of Bayreuth. He has been awarded the Battery Division Early Career Award by the Electrochemical Society (ECS). He received the award at the 250th ECS Meeting in Calgary, Canada.

The Battery Division Early Career Award was established in 2020 to recognise and support outstanding early-career scientists in battery and fuel cell research. The award honours scientists who have already distinguished themselves at an early stage of their careers through exceptional research achievements and their potential to become future leaders in their field.

In his Award Lecture, Bianchini presented recent research findings on cathode and anode materials for sodium-ion batteries. He also showcased work on solid-state electrolytes, a promising area of research for the development of safer and more efficient energy storage technologies.

“It is a great honour to receive this award,” said Bianchini. “The research achievements recognised by this distinction are the result of collaboration with many dedicated colleagues and early-career researchers.”

The Electrochemical Society is one of the world’s leading professional organisations in the field of electrochemistry. Through the Battery Division Early Career Award, it recognises outstanding contributions to the fundamental science, materials, and technologies of electrochemical energy storage systems, which efficiently convert chemical energy into electrical energy.

The award highlights the international visibility of Bayreuth’s research on battery materials and sustainable energy storage. In particular, sodium-ion batteries and solid-state batteries are regarded as key technologies for the future, supporting the energy transition and the sustainable electrification of mobility and industry.
