Parents' university talk on "Everything you always wanted to know about batteries"

23.07.2025

As part of last summer's Children's University, Prof. Dr. André Gröschel (Chair of Polymer Materials for Electrochemical Energy Storage) introduced children to the basics of battery research and answered their questions. This year, as part of the programme for accompanying adults, he gave a lecture on the chemical basics of battery storage for interested adults.

After all, batteries have become an indispensable part of everyday life. Without batteries, mobile phones, laptops, power tools and much more would literally tie us down. The lecture provided vivid insights into how batteries work, from the development of primary cells to rechargeable secondary cells, where there is currently still room for improvement in terms of performance (keyword: e-mobility). Prof. Gröschel also explained to a packed lecture hall what solutions research has in store for this.

The Children's University takes place annually during the summer semester. In a total of four lectures with pictures and experiments, children experience what science has discovered on various topics from different technical perspectives. Professors provide exciting answers to seemingly simple questions. At the same time, there are also entertaining activities for accompanying adults: there is a lecture on a current topic and a guided tour of an institute, building or facility at the university.
