The Directorate of the new Graduate Centre BayING (f.l.t.r.): Prof. Dr.-Ing. Stefan Schafföner (Deputy Director), Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Helbig (Director) and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christina Roth (Deputy Director).
With the new Graduate Center for Engineering Sciences (BayING), the University of Bayreuth is bringing together structured support for its engineering doctoral students under one roof for the first time. Under the direction of BayBatt member Prof. Dr.-Ing. Christoph Helbig, BayING offers targeted support during the research phase: broad in scope, interdisciplinary, international, and with a clear focus on the requirements of science and industry. One of the graduate center's first doctoral programms is the Battery Technology (BattTech) programme, which is offered in close cooperation with BayBatt. It is aimed at doctoral students conducting research in the field of modern energy storage. The aim of the programme is to make innovative contributions to the further development of battery technologies while ensuring structured, interdisciplinary training.
BattTech combines various engineering and natural science disciplines such as materials science, electrical engineering, electrochemistry, and process engineering. This close cooperation enables doctoral students to address complex issues from different perspectives and develop comprehensive scientific skills.
In addition to individual research work, participants benefit from a structured qualification program with seminars, conference participation, summer and winter schools, and specialized and interdisciplinary courses.
The doctoral programme thus offers PhD candidates opportunities for specialization, exchange, and personal development in the areas of scientific writing, presentation techniques, career development, and research ethics. In short, BayING graduates are not only excellent in their field, but also prepared for leadership roles in research and industry.
At the heart of BayING is also an extended mentoring programme: Not just one supervisor, but at least two other researchers accompany the doctoral programme and support the PhD candidates throughout the entire doctoral phase, both professionally and in their personal development.
At the first BayING general meeting, the steering committees for the doctoral programs were appointed, and BayING is now ready to accept its first doctoral candidates. The BattTech programme is headed by BayBatt member Prof. Dr.-Ing. Fridolin Röder. PhD candidates from the Faculty of Engineering can apply to the board of directors for one of the doctoral programmes. Admission is granted upon acceptance into the respective doctoral programme.
