With around 500 participants from 25 countries, the GDCh Electrochemistry 2026 conference attracted a record attendance. The renowned biennial conference of the German Chemical Society (GDCh) took place at the University of Bayreuth from 22 to 25 September and was organised by Bayreuth’s electrochemistry researchers in close cooperation with the Czech Chemical Society.
Over four days, the conference provided an international platform for discussing the latest developments in electrochemistry. The scientific programme featured 200 presentations, including five plenary lectures and 20 invited keynote talks, alongside 201 poster presentations. Contributions ranged from fundamental electrochemical research and industrial applications to the growing role of artificial intelligence in scientific discovery.
The event highlighted the University of Bayreuth’s strong position in electrochemical research. This was particularly evident in the numerous contributions from the Bavarian Center for Battery Technology (BayBatt), which showcased current advances in battery research and demonstrated Bayreuth’s expertise in this strategically important field. Forty conference participants also had the opportunity on Friday afternoon to tour selected BayBatt laboratories and gain insight into the research being conducted by various research groups.
In addition, BayBatt Director Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Danzer presented the BayBatt Poster Award for an outstanding contribution to battery research. The award went to Jonas Dickmanns and Moritz Bock from the Technical University of Munich for their poster on “Comparative Analysis of Silicon-Carbon Composite, Graphite, and Microscale Silicon Anodes for Next-Gen Lithium-Ion Batteries”.
“The exceptionally positive response from the international electrochemistry community is very rewarding,” said Professors Christina Roth and Roland Marschall, who chaired the conference. “The strong participation and outstanding quality of the scientific contributions demonstrated the remarkable dynamism of electrochemistry today and the importance of international collaboration in developing solutions for the energy transition, sustainability, and industrial transformation.”
